Top Ten Resources for Freelancers

10 - Listen and Learn.

Replay International Freelancers' Day sessions. You're bound to discover something new and useful if you take a few minutes to replay all the conference sessions - the ones you attended and the ones you missed. Review all the speakers. Follow their blogs, check out their websites, connect with them for inspiration, ideas and advice.

9 - Toot your own horn.

There's a whole community of freelancers out there sharing experiences, offering advice, and ready to help you market yourself effectively. Here are a few great websites and resources to start with: Graphic Design Blender (offers great tips marketing as well as other fundamental areas to focus on), Freelance Switch and Clients From Hell.

8 - Get friendly with social media.

In today's marketplace, being savvy about social media is not only good for you personally, it's essential for your business. If you don't have a presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, you're missing out on countless opportunities. There are loads of websites that offer great advice on how to increase your social media presence. Check out Social Examiner and Smart Insights for starters.

7 - Be a joiner.

Most freelancers work alone. Joining a professional organization offers a perfect way to extend your network, learn from your peers, and feel like part of a team. Join organizations such as International Freelancers Academy, The International Association of Communication Professionals, and/or Freelancers Union.

6 - Get support.

There's a lot more to being a freelancer than great ideas or top notch copy - you need to be a multi-tasking whirlwind to handle all the administration, tax filing, IT, and accounting tasks that are vital to a healthy bottom line.
